Eye Dominance – too important to overlook!
Testing eye dominance is a crucial step in mastering the art of shotgun shooting. Understanding which eye is dominant ensures proper alignment with the shotgun’s rib, enabling shooters to establish a consistent sight picture.
Ignoring eye dominance can result in misalignment, leading to missed shots and decreased overall performance. By identifying and addressing eye dominance, shotgun enthusiasts can tailor their shooting technique, selecting the most effective methods to enhance their precision and confidence on the field.
It is a fundamental aspect of refining one’s skills, in order to achieve optimal results in the exhilarating world of shotgun sports.
Step 1: Gather Materials
Before you start, ensure you have the following items:
- Lollipop (or any short handheld item with a hole in the centre)
- A background with a distinct point of reference (like a door frame or a distant object)
Step 2: Select a Point of Reference
Choose a specific point of reference in the distance, such as a doorknob or a distant tree. This will help you maintain a consistent focal point throughout the process.
Step 3: Extend Your Arms
Hold the lollipop with your lead hand and extend your arms fully.
Step 4: Center the Object
With both eyes open, center the small object (pen or target) in the hole at the center of the lollipop. Focus on the object.
Step 5: Close One Eye
Close your left eye. If the object remains in view and centered, your right eye is dominant. If the object disappears from view or shifts to the side, open your left eye and close your right eye. If the object remains centered, your left eye is dominant.
Step 6: Confirm Dominance
If you bring the lollypop towards the face, in order to maintain a view of the target, you will find that you naturally bring the lollypop back towards the dominant eye. See the video above!
Step 7: Check and check again
Regularly check your eye dominance, as it can change over time.
Remember, safety is still essential, and always ensure you are in a safe environment. If you have any concerns or questions about eye dominance testing, seek guidance from a knowledgeable source or professional.
